The sister of a South Carolina mother accused of suffocating her two young sons and driving her car into a river says the woman was in a manic state before the deaths.
Adriane Duley told Oprah Winfrey on her Thursday show that 29-year-old Shaquan Duley (shah-KWAHN' DOO'-lee) became irate after a fight over her inability to take care of her children.
Authorities say Duley then fled with her sons, checked into a motel and smothered them with her hands. She put the boys back into the car and drove it into a river off a boat ramp 10 miles away.
Helen Duley said she knew her daughter was depressed but never thought she would take such drastic action.
A judge has denied bond for Duley. Her attorney said he will pursue an insanity defense.
