Measures are being taken to table amendments to the Local Government Elections Act in Parliament soon.
The Government has decided to introduce the Bill in Parliament in the first week of next month. It was discussed at a meeting of party leaders in Parliament yesterday. Sources said the party leaders agreed to introduce the Bill.
Several amendments on the system of local government elections are reported to have been incorporated in the Bill. The amendments are aimed at changing the system of electing members in addition to rendering a better service.
The Government has also planned to introduce draft bills on elections amendment and Civil Aviation among others. Meanwhile the debate on the Emergency extension will be held on the 23rd.
This agreement was reached at the party leaders’ meeting yesterday. The President has to issue a gazette notification in this respect and have it passed in Parliament within two weeks.
