A Florida couple is giving $30 million to the University of South Carolina's pharmacy program.
University President Harris Pastides said Friday the gift from alumni William and Lou Kennedy of Orlando, Fla., is the second-largest in school history.
The Kennedys' pledge was announced earlier this year although their names were not released at the time. Pastides says the money will help pharmacy students develop skills through a link to the business school.
Pastides hopes the gift will prompt other philanthropy. In 1998, Houston Texans owner and former South Carolina student body president Bob McNair pledged $20 million to the school.
That same year, Wall Street financier Darla Moore pledged $25 million to improve South Carolina's business school. She has since given about $70 million to the university.
