President Rajapaksa has ordered the conduct of an immediate probe into the blast at the precincts of the Karadiyanaru Police Station, which killed a number of people.
Several containers which were placed at the Police station exploded at 11.30 this morning killing 19. Among them were 10 members of the Police, seven civilians and two Chinese nationals. The number injured is reported to be 52. The President has issued orders to the Acting Defence Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and the Police Chief to conduct an immediate inquiry. The President also conveyed his deepest sympathies to family members of the victims.
A company which is handling road development in the Karadiyanaru area had placed three containers in the premises of the Police station. Workers engaged in construction activities had arrived at the Police station to the secure explosives from a container. The incident happened when they attempt to secure the explosives. The other containers at the location also exploded. The injured have been admitted to the Batticaloa Hospital. Some who were critically wounded have been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital. Reports confirmed that Government Analysts and officials of the Crimes Monitoring Department had already left to the location to probe the incident.
