Today is the International Coastal Cleanup day. The Ministry of Environment has organized several programmes to mark the event.
The pollution of the oceans due to coastal activities is increasing rapidly and accounts for more than 60% of marine pollution around Sri Lanka. The International Coastal Cleanup Day is observed on the 3rd of September of each year although this year it is on September 25th. The event has been held internationally each year for the past 25 years, when people head to the beaches and begin removing debris and rubbish from shorelines, waterways, and oceans. Statistics from the 1999 ICC showed that 59% of debris collected from beaches was from land sources.
