The death toll in the Karadiyanaru blast reaches 26

26 people have been killed in the explosion that happened at the premises of the Karadiyanaru Police Station.

The accident occurred when several dynamite containers at the Police premises exploded. The bodies of 14 of the dead are lying at the Batticaloa Hospital while another 11 bodies are placed at the Chenkalladi Hospital. The death toll increased to 26 following the death of another Police officer at the Batticaloa Hospital last night. Four persons who sustained serious injuries have been transferred to Colombo National hospital.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne who visited the area last night said that the Government will provide maximum relief to the families of the victims. He said that the President has instructed to take all necessary measures. Two Chinese officials are among the dead. The Chinese Embassy in Colombo will probe their death. A group of senior officials from the Embassy left for Karadiyanaru last night.
