Construction of the Colombo–Matara Express rail-track will be accelerated.
Construction of the rail-track is being carried out in three stages. The first stage is in progress from Galle to Matara. It is hoped to complete this work within the first few months of next year. An Indian firm is handling construction work under the first and second stages of the rail-track running from Colombo to Matara. This work is being carried under the supervision of the Railway department. The rail track will have a width of six metres. The required allocations for this work are being provided by the Indian Government. Indian as well as local Engineering technology is being utilized for the project. Construction of the track from Galle to Kalutara will be carried out under stage two, while stage three will involve construction from Kalutara to Colombo. With the completion of work on the project, commuters will have facilities to reach Matara from Colombo within a very short period.
