Minister Johnston Fernando has given an assurance to cultivators that the government was geared to media in the purchase of maize.
Making clarifications at a function organized in Kurunegala, the Minister opined that due to the crisis which has surfaced with regard to maize purchases, the government had taken a decision He said all small scale industrialists suffered as a result. After discussions with the President, the Minister said that he took a decision to purchase maize as they did for paddy. It is the ordinary masses who suffer as a result of these issues.
The cultivator does the production, but the yield is purchased at a low cost. Thereafter these are stocked in warehouses of the Paddy Marketing Board. Purchases made in such a manner are sold at a higher price of 35 to 40 rupees. They also sell these stocks to the Government at 52 rupees for the production of Triposha. The Minister noted that the Government will purchase a certain percentage and make every effort to bring the situation under control.
