Minister Basil Rajapaksa has said that the Government is in the winning stage of the economic battle. He is confident that rice could be exported with the yield obtained from the next Maha.
The Minister said that for the first time after several years, it was possible to achieve an economic growth rate of 8.50 percent in the second quarter of this year. This is a growth rate which is better than even countries such as India, China and Brazil. The cultivators had made a vital contribution to the agricultural sector. He pointed out that the country was able to reach this goal due to a vast growth recorded in the fisheries, tourism, services, electricity and highways sectors. Paddy warehouses are full to capacity. He pointed out that they will not only be able to feed the country with rice in all three meals but also export stocks by the next Maha Cultivation season.
