President Rajapaksa has arrived in New York to participate in the UN General Assembly Sessions. He is accompanied by a high level delegation. The Government Information Department said the President and the delegation were warmly received in New York this morning.
The President is scheduled to address the UN Summit on its inaugural day. The President is expected to brief the UN Session about the difficult battle waged to eliminate LTTE terrorism and how the consequent challenges were overcome. The opportunity accorded to the President to address the Sessions on the first day is a notable feature. World attention is directed to the Sri Lankan President as a distinguished leader who defeated terrorism. The President is participating in the UN Sessions in the midst of the successes achieved in the economic front after routing terrorism. It is for the first time that the President is participating in session of the world body after establishing peace in the motherland with the battled won over terrorism. The President’s entourage includes First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris.
