SC lawmaker wants to outlaw camera traffic tickets

Sep 19, 2010 3:15:00 PM - thestate.com
South Carolina lawmakers plan to look into whether the town of Ridgeland's use of video cameras to enforce speed limits on Interstate 95 is legal.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Sunday that city leaders want lawmakers to see the operation before they start considering legislation to outlaw it.

Rep. Todd Rutherford says an amendment to a state transportation bill last year made it clear that cameras could be used to enforce traffic laws only under very specific circumstances. The Columbia Democrat says he thought that would end any talk of using cameras for general enforcement.

Last month, Ridgeland started using an automated traffic camera monitored by an officer to catch speeders and issue citations.
