Warm welcome to President in New York

President Rajapaksa and his entourage have been accorded a warm welcome on arrival in New York to participate in the UN General Assembly sessions. They reached the John F. Kennedy International Airport at around 3.00 am Sri Lanka time.

The United Nations will be holding its 65th sessions. This is the first time that President Rajapaksa is attending the UN Summit since the total elimination of the World’s ruthless terrorist organization. The President will be addressing the UN session on the inaugural day, that is on Thursday. He is due to clarify on the uphill task of routing LTTE terrorism and how the challenges which followed were surmounted. The opportunity afforded to the Sri Lankan leader to address the sessions on the inaugural day is significant. International media reported that World’s highest attention among State leaders attending the UN sessions is being directed to the Sri Lankan leader. During this visit, the President and his delegation is due to appraise the future development strategies of Sri Lanka. The President’s entourage includes First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and many Senior representatives.

Meanwhile, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa is slated to participate in several programmes arranged in parallel to the 65th UN General Assembly sessions. It includes programmes on First Ladies. She participated in a special religious ceremony organized at the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. The Chief Priest welcomed Mrs. Rajapaksa. Rev. Fr. Timothy M. Dolan while showering blessings on the President and the Sri Lankans wished sustainable peace to the country under the President’s leadership.
