Qatar has expressed its fullest support for the development process in Sri Lanka. This was stated by the Emir of Qatar when he met with the President.
Talks between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Emir of Qatar Khalifa Al Thani were held today. President Rajapaksa is in New York to participate in the 65thUN General Assembly sessions. The Emir of Qatar who commended the President for eliminating terrorism said it is a lesson to the entire world. An agreement was reached to start production of LNG gas in Sri Lanka. The Emir also pledged to assist the promotion of tourism between the two countries. The President focused attention on the welfare of around 98,000 Sri Lankans employed in Qatar. The Head of State of Qatar agreed to start a school for the benefit of the Sri Lankan children. He said that the entrepreneurs in his country are interested in investing in Sri Lanka. The Emir opined that he will take measures to grant observer status to Sri Lanka at the Organization of Islamic Coference. Several Ministers and Parliamentarians were also present.
