Sri Lanka has opted to generate nuclear power. The Minister of Power and Energy has requested the support of the International Atomic Energy Authority in this respect. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said the Cabinet nod has been given for a feasibility study of the first nuclear power plant.
Addressing the 54th sessions of the International Atomic Energy Authority in Vienna, the Minister pointed out that generating power at a low cost was the need of the hour. The Government has recognized the need to go for nuclear power as a solution. The United States and India have pledged support. Sri Lanka had not intention of invading a country for attempting to do so. It had always battled for its own territorial integrity. As such, the Minister emphasized that the generation of nuclear power will not impact countries in the region or other nations.
