A judge has sentenced a former Beaufort County clerk of court to five years of probation for embezzling more than $23,000 from public accounts.
The Beaufort Gazette reports 47-year-old Elizabeth Smith was found guilty Tuesday of our counts of embezzlement of public funds and one count of misconduct in office.
Smith's attorney agreed with prosecutors that Smith wrote checks from two county accounts. But Mike Macloskie says Smith always paid the money back, simply using the money to help her cash flow as she made payments on insurance policies and a vacation home.
Investigators say no money turned up missing from the county's accounts after Smith resigned following her indictment.
Smith will also have to perform 200 hours of community service.
