Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has revealed that sugar cane cultivators will be offered a fertilizer subsidy in the next budget.
He said that sugar cane cultivation is a necessity. Therefore he said that the cultivators should be offered more relief to develop the cultivation. The Minister said that as the Minister of Plantation Industries he has held discussions with the Treasury Secretary in this regard and requested for a fertilizer subsidy from the next budget. The Minister made this observation at a media briefing in Colombo. Meanwhile a group of Thai investors who offered to improve sugar cane cultivation and to invest in sugar industry met the Minister. The importance of producing a larger part of sugar required by the country was emphasized. The Minister said that this programme would be instrumental in achieving this target.
