Sri Lanka receives full support of the United Nations to meet her future development targets
This emphasis was laid at the Millennium Development Goals Summit in New York. It was launched with the intention of ensuring the rights of women and children. Leaders of the 140 countries and their First Ladies, including Shiranthi Rajapaksa joined in this meeting which was presided by the UN Secretary General. Granting equal rights for women and their empowerment, improving child education, minimizing Maternal Mortality rate, environment sustainability, poverty alleviation and elimination of AIDS were some of the goals. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa also attended a special discussion on child education.
