Several programmes are being launched to mark the World Tourism Day. Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said that the programmes are being implemented from today to the 27th of this month.
The Deputy Minister said that unlike in the past when the tourists enjoyed the beach, the present tourists need to live with nature and acquire knowledge. He said that this is borne in mind when tourism is being promoted. He said that the environment is not disturbed in making arrangements for the function to be held in Matara. He noted that many sports events will be organized.
The Deputy Minister made this observation at a media briefing held in Colombo. Massive development is evident in the tourism sector at present. The Deputy Minister said that eco-systems will not be disturbed when building tourist hotels or in providing other facilities. Director of the Tourism promotion bureau Malraj Kiriella said that due to the programmes launched from today further improvement can be expected in the tourism sector.
