The Emergency Regulations have been passed with a majority of 92 votes. 112 votes were received in favour of the bill while 20 votes were against.
Minister Dinesh Gunawardena speaking in the Parliamentary debate said that they cannot be responsible for the collapse of the opposition. He said that his responsibility is to propose that the Emergency Regulations should be implemented under the Public Security Act during the period when the country is being built under the leadership of President Rajapaksa.
Parliamentarian Lakshman Wasantha Perera said that the intelligent Tamil people have realized that they have to fulfill their duty by extending assistance to President Rajapaksa in developing the country. He said that none of the Tamil people have died due to hunger in the welfare camps. He stressed that the government is providing the same service that has been provided elsewhere, to the people in the north.
