75 turn out to promote penny tax

Sep 24, 2010 12:43:00 AM - thestate.com

More than 75 people showed up Thursday to kick off a campaign promoting a penny sales tax for transportation improvements in Richland County.

The event, held at the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, drew a range of political and business leaders in a very public show of support for the proposed tax, which goes to voters Nov. 2.

The plan has drawn its share of critics, concerned about an increased tax burden on county residents still reeling from the down economy.

But supporters noted more than 40 percent of proceeds from the tax would be paid by non-Richland residents who come to the county to work and shop, watch sports and attend military functions — people who use local services, in other words, but don’t pay local taxes.
