The Police have launched a comprehensive inquiry in search of the money totaling 70 million rupees that was robbed today from the Kelaniya area. The cash belonged to a private Bank.
The robbery considered to be one of the biggest in the recent past had taken place at Wanawasala, when the money was being taken for distribution among the branches of the private Bank. Police Media Spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody said that the van which was transporting the cash had been stopped near a deserted paddy field and robbed the cash at gunpoint. The Police Media Spokesman said that all the passengers in the vehicle had been tied before the robbers had got away with the cash. It has been reported that the suspects had been attired in uniforms similar to that of Civil Defence Force members. The Peliyagoda Police are probing the incident under the guidance of DIG in charge of the Western Province North H.S. Dayananda.
