It has been decided to set up a Nutritional Operations Committee at the national level.
The purpose of the Committee is to streamline activities of reaching the global targets on child nutrition in Sri Lanka. Minister Maithripala Sirisena disclosed this information when UNICEF Resident Representative to Sri Lanka Riza Hussain met him. The meeting took place at the Health Ministry. Representatives from the Health, Agriculture, Livestock, Education, Economic and Finance sectors will be appointed to this Committee. The Health Ministry has decided to appoint Parliamentarian Dr. Sudharhini Fernandopulle to head this Committee. The Minister pointed out that initially national nutritional programmes will be launched in some districts. Thereafter it is planned to moot programmes countrywide. The UNICEF representative lauded the action the Government has initiated to improve the nutritional standards of children in the North and East with the war drawing to a close.
