Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa is to call on Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to nominate another name to the Parliamentary Council since the person nominated by him has refused to accpet the nomination.
Rajapaksa has said that he would forward the names of the Prime Minister’s and the Opposition Leader’s nominess to the Council to President Mahinda Rajapaksa next week once the Opposition Leader nominates a new name.
Rajapaksa has reportedly said that he had received the name of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne’s nominee and that of Opposition Leader Wickremesinghe.
The Opposition Leader nominated the name TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran who refused to accept the nomination, saying the party opposed the 18th Amendment.
The Speaker, Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader are to serve as ex-officio members of the five- member Parliamentary Council.
