The UN Secretary General has informed President Rajapaksa that the UN panel on Sri Lanka will not have any legal mandate to investigate allegations. Ban –Ki-Moon made this reference when he met with President Rajapaksa in New York.
He has stressed that the UN panel was appointed only to play an advisory role. Commenting on the discussion Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris said that the Secretary General clearly stated that the panel had no legal mandate to investigate allegations against Sri Lanka.
The President explained in detail about the Reconciliation Commission appointed by him and the useful role played by it. The Secretary General expressed his satisfaction about the Commission.
The Minister said that in general the discussions were instrumental in strengthening relations between Sri Lanka and UN.
