Plans are afoot to re-establish links between the village and the temple in view of the Sambuddha Jayanthiya. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said their desire is to cultivate moral values while enhancing the economy of the people.
He said that as Buddhists, the people should be induced according to the Dhamma sermons to become good citizens. When taking into consideration the situation of Sinhala Buddhists, they are the weakest economy-wise. He emphasized that taking into consideration this factor, action should be initiated to develop the economy.
The Prime Minister was speaking at a function at the Nevakada Selgiri Vihare at Udubaddewa. The sculpturing of the world’s largest Buddha statue in the standing posture commenced at an auspicious time under the Prime Minister’s patronage. Many Parliamentarians including Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa was present.
