Founder of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike who thereassumed the party leadership are being commemorated.
Toay is the 51st commemoration of the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandarnaike. The Bandaranaike era can be described as a period which marked milestones in Sri Lanka’s political, cultural and economic spheres. The UNP which assumed power after gaining independence, did not have a clear cut policy to make it more meaningful. It was on such an occasion that the Late Mr. Bandaranaike took the initiative of launching the SLFP. Another stalwart of the South, D.A. Rajapaksa joined him. The Bandaranaike regime made a vital contribution to effecting several significant changes within the island. He succeeded in injecting life to the nation.
Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who was elected the party leader after the assassination of Mr. Bandaranaike became the first women Prime Minister of the World winning the Parliamentary elections conducted in 1960. She rendered yeoman service to the country. She raised a voice on behalf of the rights of women. Following the assassination of hr husband, Mrs. Bandaranaike succeeded in meting out the responsibilities towards her family, while giving leadership to the country, surmounting all challenges she confronted. She bade farewell to the nation on 10th October 2000. Until then she succeeded in rendering an invaluable service to the country engaging in active politics.
