Civilians are totally prohibited from walking on rail tracks. The Railways Department is strictly enforcing this regulation.
The Department has emphasized that only workers repairing the track and officials can walk on railroads according to the Railways Ordinance. Railways Commercial Superintendent Vijaya Samarasinghe said that the number of accidents on railroads had increased in the past due to the relaxation of the regulations. Many accidents had also taken place at railway crossings, due to negligence of the drivers of vehicles. Mr. Samarasinghe said this had resulted in the loss of lives as well as property. As such commuters as well as drivers have been cautioned to direct their attention to warnings on railroads and railway crossings.
