Strict laws will be introduced against forcibly employing children for begging.
Minister of Child Development and Women’s Empowerment Tissa Karalliyadda said strict laws will be enacted against using children for begging.
The Minister said measures to be initiated, will be discussed with the Ministry of Justice and other relevant authorities. Surveys have revealed that the children who beg at public places are being subject to numerous types of abuse.
Surveys conducted earlier by the Children and Women’s Bureau, have revealed that the parents hand over their children to certain unscrupulous individuals to be engaged as beggars for a daily payment. The Minister stressed that strict action will be taken against such individuals who hire children for begging.
