The Portuguese Prime Minister has agreed to provide wind and solar power technology to Sri Lanka.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates and President Mahinda Rajapaksa in New York. Portugal is one of the front runners in generating electricity with the use of wind and solar power.
45% of their power needs are fulfilled through these sources. The discussions, the President had with the Portuguese Premier were aimed at receiving the technological know how. The Portuguese Prime Minister also agreed to extend his fullest support for tourism promotion in Sri Lanka.
Portugal is the current President of the EU. Presidential Media Coordinator Vijayananda Herath said that the President has also requested the Portuguese Prime Minister to return the artifacts that were taken away to Portugal in the past.
