Around Rs. 60 million worth of jewellery belonging to Lalith Kotelawala and his wife Cecille has been recovered, police spokesman Prashantha Jayakody confirmed.
Jayakody said the information had been given to him by officials within the CID. It has been reported that CID officials found the stash, which the couple had not declared.
The police spokesman said the jewellery was found at the People’s Bank branch in Union Place.
Lalith Kotelawala was chairman of Ceylinco Consolidated. He was remanded on February 26, 2009, for the misappropriation of Rs. 26 billion worth of deposits from Golden Key Credit. To date, many of the unfortunate depositors who invested in Golden Key, which offered tantalisingly high interest rates, have not recovered their money.
His wife, Cecille Kotelawala, is yet to be remanded, though there is a warrant for her arrest.
