The Leatherneck, the new course for the USMC Ultimate Mud Run, did something Saturdaythat wasn’t entirely unexpected by organizers: It became The Bottleneck.
By Saturday afternoon, Interstate 26 near the Sandy Run exit was backed up for at least six miles, delaying the start time for race teams.
Some of the more than 3,500 teams that registered didn’t even get to run the 4.5mile course. Others simply parked their cars on the side of the road and ran to the race site -- which has but one entrance and exit.
Organizers knew that the traffic on race day would be tricky, so they asked teams to get to the course early. Leaving two hours before race time from downtown Columbia wasn’t enough time.
