The Sri Lanka Ports Authority which runs the island’s ports, expects to handle payments by port users online by January next year.
An official said its internal finance division as well as external payments are being computerised to speed up transactions and cargo movements. The official pointed out that by January next year they should be able to give an online facility where customers can pay and send documents to them online. The system will also communicate with the customs ‘Asycuda’ electronic payment system. He said the electronic payments system will help to reduce delays in cargo movements and meet long-standing requests from shippers for ‘e-commerce’ facilities. The official added that it would eliminate the need for port users to visit the harbour to make payments.
