The Sri Lanka Air Force which supported in destroying terrorist strongholds from air, have now joined in rescuing people from disasters. Another humanitarian operation of the Air Force has been reported.
The Sri Lanka Air Force rendered a noble service in the operations mooted to liberate the country from the terrorists. It is now shouldering the task of rebuilding the country. The Air Force has launched a special programme to support disaster management which has a direct impact on the development of the country. More than 120 members of the Air Force have received special training on saving people who are subject to disasters due to floods and fire. A rehearsal of lifesaving operations with the participation of a selected group was conducted at the Negombo beach.
Wing Commander Ruwan Jayasinghe said that the main objective of their exercise was to provide a practical training to the fire extinguishing and lifesaving group on people who are impacted by floods and fire. He revealed that the Air Force already has a team which has been well trained in lifesaving activities, in addition to the necessary equipment. Members of this team had earlier made a vital contribution in the rescue of people from calamities such as the tsunami, floods and landslides as well as during fires which had erupted in buildings.
