The Health Ministry has begun inquiries with regard to medicinal drugs which cause harm to the public than assure recovery. It is geared to take legal action against companies which import such drugs.
The Health Ministry points out that certain products which are available in generic names in the open market have not been registered with the Cosmetics Devices and Drug Authority. Wide publicity is given to certain products claiming that they are suitable for diabetes, heart ailments and cholesterol. The Ministry has received complaints that some of these products are not suitable for consumption. The Ministry points out that the use of these products may lead to heart diseases, cancer and other side effects.
Minister Maithripala Sirisena issued orders to the National Drug Authority to prohibit the import of drugs which are sold in generic names sans its approval. He also gave instructions to take legal action against pharmacies which sell these products.
