The Transport Minister has emphasized to bus associations that he will not permit a fare hike. Minister Kumara Welgama laid this emphasis during a discussion he had with the Private Bus Association Federation.
The meeting was held at the Transport Ministry to discuss several issues to increase the minimum fare from six to seven rupees. The bus fare hike percentage based on the national policy on 1st July this year was 0.5. Bus associations proposed that the fare should be hiked only if there was an increase in the price of fuel. The Minister told bus owners that despite a decision based on a consensus that fares should not be hiked, he underlined that an increase cannot be effected at any time.
