The first stage of reconstruction of the Southern Express rail track has ended.
The Transport Ministry said reconstruction of the railroad from Weligama to Matara has been completed. It is about 14 kilometres. Reconstruction is taking place with the utilization of modern technology. All development activities related to the railroad are due to be completed within this year. Thereafter, it will be possible to run trains on this rail track at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour. A drainage network on either side of the rail track will be built for the smooth flow of water. Minister Kumara Welgama inspected the reconstruction work of this rail raod.
