Initial activities in relation to the generation of power at the Norochcholai Thermal Power Plant have commenced.
The Minister of Power and Energy said their intention is to commence the generation of power before the end of December this year. The entire Plant has the capacity of generating 900 megawatts of power. 300 megawatts would be generated under Stage One. The Ministry said that 95 percent of the work under the first stage has already been completed. The ship carrying the first stock of coal needed for the Power Plant is due to reach the island by the end of next month. The launching of work on the Norochcholai Thermal Power Plan took place under the patronage of the President in the year 2006. It is planned to complete work on the entire project within the next three years.
