UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has pointed out that there is no need for devolution of power under a federal system which was agreed during peace talks with the LTTE at that time. Mr. Attanayake had made this reference participating in the BBC “Sandesaya” programme from England recently.
Mr. Attanayake opined that such a tale is not required now. What was needed now was to go for a political solution. There are no armed outfits such as the LTTE. Therefore, they believe that priority had to be selected immediately. That is the environment for the civilians of the North had to be created and the resettlement completed ensuring them a livelihood. Priority had also to be given to meeting their health needs and the schooling of children. Earlier, as a political solution, Mr. Attanayake said they presented a proposal for the devolution of power, but today the situation has completely changed. The earlier proposal they initiated was to discourage those who had taken to arms. But now there are no armed groups.
