President returns home bringing fame to Sri Lanka

President Rajapaksa returns to the island after participating in the UN General Assembly sessions, bringing fame to Sri Lanka.

The President arrived at the Katunayake International Airport early this morning. The attention of the World was drawn to President Rajapaksa who addressed the UN Summit and the Millennium Development Goals summit. He seized the opportunity to meet several state leaders and succeeded in bringing more benefits to Sri Lanka through the bilateral discussions. The President also received an opportunity to have discussions with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the present situation in Sri Lanka. The President succeeded in providing a clear report on Sri Lanka. At the same time, the President was able to get a clear statement from the UN Chief on the panel on Sri Lanka, appointed by Ban Ki-Moon.

The attention of World leaders was directed to the statement made by the Vice President of the Maldives, in his address at the UN General Assembly that the bold leadership of President Rajapaksa was a major strength to the region. Critics pointed out that this was an impetus to uplift Sri Lanka’s image in the world. The Maldivian Vice President applauded the initiative taken by the Sri Lankan leader to sort out the political dispute in his country.

The First Lady discharged a major task on behalf of Sri Lanka during this visit. The discussion she had with US First Lady Michelle Obama was significant. At this meeting, she assured Mrs. Rajapaksa the full support of the United States to uplift women and child welfare.
