A large collapsed in a key water line has shut down mid-morning traffic in the Vista on Assembly Street between Gervais and Lady streets.
Water was gushing from the broken street surface until city officials shut down the flow.
Traffic is being rerouted away from Assembly Street on the block between Gervais, at the State House, and Lady, one block north. Drivers are advised to approach the Vista and downtown from another direction.
That stretch of Assembly will be closed indefinitely, according to DOT District Maintenance Engineer Robert Dickinson.
State and city officials are trying to assess the damage, which could be considerable. The water system ruptured in three places under the intersection. Water is slowly flowing from four cracks, each about 5 to 7 yards apart.
That means theres a lot of substructural damage, Dickinson said.
