The Parliamentary Council introduced along with the 18th Constitutional Amendment comes into force. The Council has now received the legal power with all its members being appointed.
The Parliamentary Council introduced with the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which was recently approved in Parliament with more than a two thirds majority now has the stipulated five members. The Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader will serve as ex-officio members in the Council. In addition the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leaders should nominate one member each. Accordingly, the Prime Minister has nominated Parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwer to represent the Muslim community, while the Opposition Leader nominated D.M. Swaminathan, representing the Tamil Community. Assistant Secretary to Parliament Niel Iddawala said that Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has submitted these nominations to the President. Accordingly the five member Parliamentary Council now enjoys the authoritative power.
