Immigration reform hearings set

Oct 1, 2010 4:05:00 PM - thestate.com
The S.C. General Assembly is set to take on immigration reform once again.

A new Senate subcommittee has been appointed and will hold a series of hearings across the state to discuss immigration issues.

The first meeting will be held Thursday in North Charleston. The Columbia hearing will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Gressette Building at the State House complex.

The subcommittee members are Sen. Larry Martin, R-Pickens; Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston; and Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Charleston. Immigration has become a favorite topic for the General Assembly to discuss.

In the spring, a judiciary subcommitee met twice to hear testimony over a bill that would have created an Arizona-style immigration law in South Carolina. The bill never moved out of the subcommittee but two hearings were held to discuss it. Both hearings were heated as legislators, public officials and the general public clashed over how the state should enforce immigration laws.
