Columbia's interim police chief Carl Burke will retire Oct. 15, according to a late afternoon press release issued by the City of Columbia.
The one-sentence press release said the retirement was announced by City Manager Steve Gantt, who is responsible for hiring and firing city employees.
City officials were not returning phone calls on Friday afternoon. Burke also could not be reached for comment.
Word of the change in the chief's office came as a surprise to officers on the street, who said they were not aware that Burke's retirement had been announced.
On Wednesday, City Council rejected a plan to allow Sheriff Leon Lott to manage the police department. The council decided to hire a permanent chief by year's end and to form a committee to study unification of city and county law enforcement agencies over the next six months.
