Businessmen and the British Council are jointly sponsoring the programme to teach English to rural children, launched under the instructions of the President.
Several programmes have been launched to provide English language knowledge to children throughout the country. The Vijaya Kumaratunge Vidyalaya in Kuruwita has been selected for this programme to be carried out by the British Council. Around 400 children are studying in the school. The aim of the programme is to improve English knowledge in school children by 2012. The DEMO Company has invested eight million rupees in the project. The agreement in this connection was signed in Colombo yesterday. Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province Maheepala Herath was amongst those who participated.
