The water levels of several rivers are rising with the heavy rainfall experienced in several parts of the country. Many areas are also facing a flood threat.
The Irrigation Department said that areas in the vicinity of the Gin Ganga and the Nilwala River are threatened with floods. The water levels of the Kelani River, Kalu Ganga and the Attanagalu Oya have risen to a considerable extent. The environs of the Pinga Oya are impacted with minor floods. If the heavy rains continue, the situation is expected to become worse. As such, the Irrigation Department has called on the residents in the environs of the rivers to exercise vigilance.
In the meantime, there are landslide threats in Badulla, Kandy and Matale. Six houses have been seriously damaged due to a landslide in the Spring Valley Village in Badulla. Heavy fog is interrupting the movement of traffic along the Nuwara Eliya – Colombo main road. The stretch from Ramboda to Nuwara Eliya is completely covered with fog.
Kandy, Badulla, Gampaha, Kalutara, Matara, Galle, Ratnapura and Colombo districts are seriously affected by the heavy showers. One death has so far been reported while many have been displaced.
Meanwhile, a child was killed after being caught in heavy flooding in the Kurunegala area. 20 houses have been severely damaged. About 22 families are displaced. The Kurunegala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman said that they are being provided all required facilities including cooked meals.
