I write to convey my sincere thanks to your Columnist (Vimukthi Yapa) for his article appearing on Page 5 of The Sunday Leader on September 26 for dealing with the expenses relating to the Presidential team vist to the UNGA. I have no reason to disbelieve what Vimukthi Yapa had quoted (in fair detail), which I believe had been done after due verification. I am also quite certain, that much of the information contained in that article, would have taken most of the readers/citizens by surprise! As most of us were ‘made to understand’ (or given the impression) that the government delegation to the UNGA comprised of a mere half-a-dozen or so individuals, who went ‘on official business’ at the expense of the public coffers as portrayed by the government media.
However, I fail to understand, why the writer of the article had omitted the name of Namal Rajapaksa, despite the fact that he was prominently featured in the local TV/electronic/print media. It was probably Namal’s ‘first’ (orientation) visit, of such a high profile. It is also obvious to all, that the President intends to groom his son, to take-over the reigns in the course of time; as his counter-part in North Korea has done. It would be good if your newspaper would continue to highlight such wasteful expenditure of public funds for the ‘boosting’ of the govt’s/president’s ‘image’ while using it as a means to lure others and demolish opposing parties.
