The UNP has called for an explanation from the party’s Kurunegala District parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera on several issues.
Jayasekera, who is a member of the pro-reforms group in the UNP, last month announced that he along with about 25 other UNP MPs would sit independently in parliament if the party leadership did not implement the proposed party reforms. The decision was later changed after the party leadership agreed to resolve the issues within 10 days and the pro-reforms group arrived at an interim-agreement.
The pro-reforms group headed by parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa has agreed to wait till the party convention in November without lobbying for positions in the party.
Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has called on Jayasekera to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him over two controversial issues – Writing to a Sinhala daily newspaper contradicting a report that the party’s Working Committee had decided to take action against seven dissident MPs for voting in favour of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and interrupting Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, when he was on a live programme on a private television channel, to say that the Working Committee had taken any decision to take disciplinary action against the seven MPs.
