A South Carolina artist is building a statue made entirely of books called "Bookzilla."
Karl Beckwith Smith begins designing and building the statue Monday in front of the Gaillard Auditorium in Charleston. The work is expected to be finished on Wednesday.
The statue is a project of the Charleston Volunteers for Literacy and is being created for a fundraising event for a reading program operating in five public schools in Charleston County. That program involves volunteers working one-on-one with students for 90 minutes a week to help teach them to read.
Smith says creating a statue with discarded books draws attention to the effort to make sure children have the opportunity and ability to read.
