The medical laboratory at the Kalutara General Hospital is in total disarray, the Association of Government Medical Laboratory Technologists allege. According to investigations made by them, lab specimens and a number of other important chemicals and lab equipment are being stored in unhygienic conditions, often on the floor and even in the bathroom of the Hospital Laboratory.
President of the SLAGMLT, Ravi Kumudesh explained that histopathology specimens were gathered by the hospital for microscopic examination of tissue in order to study manifestations of diseases such as cancer. However, he alleged, the results of the examinations could plausibly be inaccurate as the specimens were being stored on the floor and in other unhygienic conditions.
He elaborated further that the roof of the medical laboratory was leaking in places — and had been for some time — adding further damage can thus be caused to the safety of the lab specimens and other equipment stored therein. He said that following unsuccessful dialogue attempts with the Director of the Kalutara Hospital, the SLAGMLT had decided to draw media attention to the matter, and inform the Minister of Health about the issue, asking that remedial measures be made as soon as possible.
