Court prevents UNP from suspending members

Oct 5, 2010 11:31:28 AM - itnnews.lk

The Colombo District Court has issued an enjoining order preventing the suspension of membership of UNP Parliamentarians Manusha Nanayakkara, Upeksha Swarnamali and Nimal Wijesinghe.

The Court’s ruling preventing the UNP from revoking their party membership is valid until the 18th of this month. The UNP has been prevented from taking action on the undated resignation letters submitted to the leadership by the Parliamentarians concerned during the last election period. The ruling was given after considering a petition submitted by these Parliamentarians. In their petition, Manusha Nanayakkara, Upeksha Swarnamali and Nimal Wijesinghe had mentioned that the UNP was planning to institute illegal action to revoke their membership as a result of exercising their vote in favour of the 18th Constitutional Amendment.
